The idea

Managers ask for a date, not a number of weeks. Today is Monday 3 March, and each market orders today:

Formulas

Lead time × 7

Key points

Back-in-stock dateThe day new stock lands, if you order today.
Work it outAdd the lead time to today's date. Weeks × 7 gives the days.
Report both datesWhen it runs out, and when it's back. The days in between are lost sales.

A date is easier to act on than a number of weeks: everyone knows what 7 April means.

Practice

Try each one in your head first, then open the answer.

1. How many days until Canada's order arrives?
5 weeks × 7 = 35 days
2. Canada orders today, Monday 3 March. Its lead time is 5 weeks. When is it back in stock?
Monday 7 April
3. Tap a market whose new stock arrives last.
Both have a 6-week lead time: back on Monday 14 April.
4. Canada runs out in 2 weeks, on 17 March, and its stock is back on 7 April. How many days is it out of stock?
(5 − 2) weeks × 7 = 21 days
